Poems of Progress
David Devaney shares his reflections about his journey with the Southern Louisiana Veterans Health Care System’s MOVE! Program by writing poetry.
To Change
The "MOVE!" Commitment
To change is very difficult,
Three quarters now gone by.
At seventy six, I must on “MOVE!”
Continue to rely.
They care about my Wellness,
Like no one’s done before,
At times it seems like more than me,"
My hopes, they reassure.
Though every day is difficult,
I take them one by one.
Exercise then monitor,
My new life has begun.
Then each new day, a text arrives,
At sixteen past the hour.
Asking for those calories,
That my new life, empower.
This Texter goes by Annie,
She really seems to care.
So every now and then she'll ask,
Do I, with strength, prepare.
And though this battle seems up hill,
The weight is going down.
As ounce by ounce with patience,
She wipes away my frown.
So now I've formed new habits,
Am committed to succeed.
Life's focus on one hundred years,
With Wellness as my creed.
As slowly, softly, gently,
A new me, I aspire.
With less of me, there now is more,
Since “MOVE!” did, me, inspire.
Impossible alone!
