Discovering His Will to MOVE!

Looking for help to shed some unwanted pounds, Ted Whyshyvanuk realized that the insights and knowledge offered by the MOVE! program were very effective in helping him reach his goals.

With the MOVE! team in Tucson, AZ, Ted learned to develop small, simple habits that contributed not only to weight loss but to a healthier lifestyle overall.

Finding His Motivation

For Ted, a well-earned retirement brought with it some unexpected challenges. "Fewer required activities and less exposure to friends and coworkers combined to tag on extra pounds," he recalls. Although "the consequences were slow to accumulate," Ted soon found that his retirement lifestyle had resulted in both his wardrobe and range of activities becoming restricted. When his VA provider referred him to the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans as part of a plan to manage his weight, Ted says he knew that "enough was enough" and embarked on a journey of positive change for his health and his life.

Increasing His Understanding

Ted began to attend MOVE! group sessions in September 2023 and quickly discovered that MOVE!'s emphasis on the individual helped keep him on track during his journey to better health. "It forced me to understand my own relationship to food and to eating," he explains. "It, and the other participants, provided very valuable insights." Such insights included becoming more mindful of his eating patterns, his food choices, and portion sizes.

Still MOVEing Forward

Since changing his lifestyle, Ted shares that "making healthy choices has become easier" and "weight loss, and the mechanics thereof, have 'MOVE!-d' up in importance." He now uses a step counter to track his daily activity as well as the Annie MOVE! Weight Management subscription to help him maintain his MOVE! progress. Ted has lost 18 pounds since starting MOVE! and plans to continue attending group sessions in 2024. He thanks his MOVE! team for their support and says that with their encouragement, he is confident that he can keep up with his healthy habits. "It's considerably easier to maintain a more healthful lifestyle if you've 'walked down that path more frequently,' and that's a big benefit of MOVE!."
