Motivation in a Shared Purpose
Joseph Vanhorn found the support and motivation he needed to begin working toward a healthy weight from fellow Veterans in MOVE!.
Along with these Veterans and the MOVE! team at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System in Tucson, AZ, Joseph built a new lifestyle that included healthy eating and physical activity habits.
Deciding to MOVE! Again
According to Joseph, "I have been focused on my weight my entire life." While he had always experienced some struggle to maintain a healthy weight, after his retirement, he became more sedentary as a result of his diverticulitis. After he underwent surgery, Joseph’s VA care team suggested that he try the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans. Even though Joseph had tried to lose weight through what he called "extreme" diet and exercise in the past, MOVE! offered him a new path forward on his journey to better health.

A New Target
Joseph started MOVE! in October 2023 and began learning about tools and strategies that could help him achieve his health and weight management goals. "Being mindful about my eating is the most helpful," he explains. "I have incorporated more fresh vegetables and removed all ‘junk foods’ from my diet." In addition to that change, Joseph also increased his physical activity and became more aware of the amount of food and beverages he consumed. Working in a group setting with other Veterans helped Joseph share his experience and kept him motivated to push on for even greater progress.
Reaping the Benefits
Since developing a new, healthy lifestyle, Joseph has seen improvements in his life beyond just the scale. He has lost weight, has more energy, feels happier, and has seen improvement in his general health. He continues to practice mindful eating and enjoys walking to stay active. Joseph is also especially grateful for his MOVE! Coordinator, Becky Biggard, whose support and motivation contributed greatly to his accomplishments.
