The Right Support

When Kent Stine decided to make changes to improve his health, he did so with the support and guidance of the MOVE! team at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH.

 

 

Finding His Motivation

Kent explains that while he wanted to maintain a healthy weight, it wasn't just that easy for him. "I usually eat well," he explains, "I just don't get around real good." He dealt with stress, and both back and joint pain, each of which was further affected by his weight. Kent tried to lose weight but never achieved lasting results. While lack of progress was discouraging, he found motivation and support in his VA dietitian, Ann Fisher. She recommended the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans as an option that could really work for Kent.

Beginning to MOVE!

Kent started MOVE! by attending individual sessions both in person and by telephone. This flexibility allowed him to start his weight management journey in the ways that worked best for him. He also participated in MOVE! group sessions, noting that talking to other Veterans helped him make changes. Recalling every step along the way, Kent credits Ann and the rest of his VA team, including Nurse Practitioner Sara King, for their support. Acknowledging several additional members of this healthcare team, including Joel Sweeney from pharmacy and Don Cummings from KT, Kent shares how together they helped him develop new strategies to engage in healthy eating and track his progress.

Enjoying a New Life

The combination of Kent's healthy choices helped him on the path to reaching his goals. Since starting MOVE!, he has lost 60 pounds and experienced other health benefits, too. Kent has more energy, has seen improved lab results, needs fewer medications, and says his mood overall has improved. Thanks to these positive changes, Kent has more time to enjoy his hobbies, such as woodworking. Improving his sleep is still on Kent's radar and he plans to continue working toward this weight loss goal so that he can get back into golfing again.
