Getting on Track to Better Health
Zipporah Sherald refused to let challenges slow her down, and with the MOVE! team at the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston, SC, she lost weight and found confidence and happiness too!
Ready to Feel Better
Zipporah embarked on her journey to a healthy weight after learning of a lab result that suggested she might have a health issue. "To hear that I might be borderline diabetic was a wake-up call," she explains. That wasn’t the only consequence of her weight, however. "For years I’ve had body pains (neck, back, swollen legs/feet)," she shares. Zipporah had attempted to lose weight using various diets and systems but lasting change proved elusive. When her VA dietitian, Karen Maher, suggested that she try the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, Zipporah did her research and decided to give it a shot.

Starting to MOVE!
Zipporah began working with her MOVE! team where she was empowered to develop healthy habits that she hoped to maintain for a long time. MOVE! emphasizes a two-pronged approach to simple, significant change through mindful and healthy eating and being more physically active. For Zipporah, physical activity and healthy food choices were essential in changing her future. She began an exercise program that worked for her, where she had fun and enjoyed the challenge without feeling pressured. This exercise included water aerobics, which matched perfectly with her love of the water!
A New Direction
Since starting MOVE!, Zipporah has seen a positive shift in her life. "MOVE! offers tons of benefits," she explains, "such as self-confidence, self-love, and a happier me because of feeling lighter." Zipporah’s renewed joy in life and positive perspective are evident as she explains, "I have more to go in my journey, and even when I fall off the tracks due to things in life beyond my control, I still get back up and keep it moving." She now enjoys outdoor activities more often and reports that "I feel good, I look good, and you’ll know it in my conversation and smile." She is also grateful for the support of her MOVE! team along the way. "My life is different," she shares, "because now I truly care and am in tune with my body. I love the way I feel and look daily…I participate in bowling but mostly love dancing." To pursue that love, she plans to take salsa lessons for fun and exercise!
