Overcoming a Plateau With MOVE!
Richard Nicholai embraced the tools and strategies offered through MOVE! to help make his own weight loss efforts even more effective.
Richard worked with the MOVE! team at the Kansas City VA Medical Center in Kansas City, MO, to help him develop healthy habits lasting change.
A Work in Progress
Richard started the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans already motivated and determined to improve his health. His weight management journey began before MOVE!, as he had managed to lose 50 pounds through being active, watching his portions, and meal planning with his wife. In March of 2023, Richard’s weight hit a plateau, but he didn’t let that stop him. His doctor suggested that he give MOVE! a try. Richard attended an orientation class for the MOVE! Program in March 2023 and chose to work one-on-one with a registered dietitian in a virtual setting.

Refining His Plan
Richard shares that he learned helpful tips through the MOVE! program to help him get past his weight management plateau. Among these tips were the importance of eating at a slower pace, managing his portions, and tracking calories. Richard consistently reads the nutrition labels on packages, compares products, and documents everything he consumes. He found the Notes app on his phone and a food scale to be very helpful in tracking his food and calorie intake.
Continuing to Push Forward
Richard explains that one of the most essential aspects of his success with MOVE! was the support he received from his MOVE! Dietitian, health care team, and most importantly his wife. While participating in MOVE! from March to December of 2023, Richard was successfully able to lose an additional 21 pounds. Along with his weight loss, Richard reports significant health benefits, such as lower cholesterol, increased energy, and being able to reduce the number of medications he is taking. He finds he now has the energy to exercise three times per week, along with keeping more active at home and at work.
