Effort Leads to Achievement

For Ramòn Luis Melèndez Leòn, or "Moncho," the combination of weight management medicine and healthy lifestyle changes he learned by participating in MOVE! at the San Juan VA Medical Center in San Juan, PR, resulted in losing weight and achieving his health goals.

A Chance to Change

Moncho shares that his struggle to maintain a healthy weight was affecting him in more than just physical ways. He had difficulty living his life and enjoying normal activities, and this in turn led to anxiety and depression about his weight. His VA dietitian, Mayra Roman, suggested a twofold approach. In addition to medication, Moncho could participate in the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, where he would have support to develop the healthy habits he needed to maintain his weight loss.

Learning Together

Reaping the benefit of sharing experiences with other Veterans in his MOVE! group, Moncho learned how to put strategies like eating wisely and being physically active into place to create a healthy lifestyle. Especially important in helping Moncho adjust his food intake was drinking more water. Using tools like the Annie MOVE! Weight Management Subscription, he stayed accountable as he made these lifestyle changes.

Enjoying the Health Benefits

Moncho has lost over 40 pounds with MOVE! and has experienced significant benefits in many areas of his life. "Since starting," he explains, "my quality of life is increasing. I can put on my socks and shoes without help, I started playing softball again, I was in size 48 and now I’ve bought pants in size 40." He is especially proud to see photos of his progress, and "seeing that with sacrifice and discipline," he was able to achieve his goals.
