A Chance Meeting Leads to Change

Jon Logan encountered MOVE! through a "happy accident" at the Milo C. Huempfner Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Green Bay, WI, and committed to a new, healthy lifestyle that helped him lose weight and achieve his health goals.

An Unexpected Path

Before starting the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, Jon had struggled to maintain a healthy weight for most of his life. "I have been a yo-yo," he explains, sharing that while being an athlete and serving in the Army often helped motivate him to lose weight, habits like stress eating would lead to weight regain. He was "unhealthy and depressed," but one visit to his local VA helped him find a new path forward. He learned about MOVE! by speaking with staff at a VA health fair and decided to give it a try.

All the tools are at your disposal for you to succeed. I didn’t even scratch the surface of what is offered and I found what works for me.

A Reason to Strive

Focusing on his family, Jon identified his reason to change and found the support he needed. "My specific motivations are many," he explains, "but at the top is to be able to celebrate 50 years of marriage with my bride…I also have two sons, one of whom is beginning his military journey and one who is considering it for when he graduates in three years. I think it would be awesome to have all served at the same time." In order to make that a reality, Jon knew that he would need to be in peak physical and mental shape. With MOVE!, he began to learn new techniques and strategies to gain healthy eating and physical activity habits. Unlike other diets that hadn’t helped in the past, the lifestyle health behavior change focus in MOVE! empowered Jon to make simple, significant changes that he believed would last.

A Work in Progress

Thanks to making those healthy changes, Jon has lost nearly 40 pounds! He is grateful for the constant support of his wife, as well as the ongoing encouragement and guidance from his MOVE! team. Jon particularly enjoyed using the MOVE! Workbook and the Home Telehealth option of care. Losing weight has resulted in significant improvements in Jon’s health. He has eliminated his need for medications, sleeps better, exercises 6 days a week, and has improved his mental health. Most importantly, he shares, "I am happier, which is the best part because it affects every aspect of your life. I find myself to be a much better everything (husband, dad, colleague, friend, and soldier) when I am maintaining a healthy weight." While Jon has made great strides, he explains that he’s still a work in progress. He is confident that as he works toward even more healthy lifestyle changes, the lessons he’s learned with MOVE! will provide a foundation for a long, happy, and healthy future.
