A Positive Way Forward With MOVE!

Aquinas Kenrog overcame many obstacles to achieve his goal of weight loss and better health.

With the help of the MOVE! team at the Lawton VA Clinic in Fort Sill, OK, Aquinas made small, lasting changes to his routine to create a healthy lifestyle.


An Opportunity to Change

For Aquinas, maintaining a healthy weight was never a challenge during his Army service. For 20 years, he was able to keep his weight where he wanted it to be. Recently, Aquinas began to notice that his weight was contributing to health issues, especially his cholesterol. This "hidden side" of weight gain worried him, so when his provider told him about the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, Aquinas decided to take advantage of the opportunity to get back on track with his health and weight.

The Value of Focus

Aquinas began his MOVE! weight management journey expecting it to be "just another program," but he quickly appreciated how it was different. He learned that MOVE! emphasizes the value of making small, lasting changes to eating and physical activity habits as part of a healthy lifestyle. Aquinas was determined to reach his goal weight and began embracing these changes. He chose healthier food and drink options more frequently, managed his portion sizes, and became generally more mindful about the choices he made when buying groceries and cooking meals. He also received timely guidance from his MOVE! team that helped him remain accountable and committed as he pursued his goal.

Enjoying a Healthy Lifestyle

"Every week I see great results," Aquinas shares, "which motivates me to continue on." Since starting MOVE!, he has surpassed his original weight loss goal and plans to continue with the habits that helped him improve his health. "I’m looking forward to… hiking, fishing, and cycling, and scavenger hunts," he explains. "I enjoy cutting grass, climbing, trimming tree branches, and many activities which are enough to [help me] maintain my weight."
