Riding to Better Health

When Bill Hartsfield decided to make changes to his lifestyle to lose weight, he started a journey of healthy habits with the MOVE! team at the Las Cruces VA Clinic in Las Cruces, NM.

Overcoming a New Challenge

"I have battled with weight management all of my adult life," Bill explains. "I enjoy eating." When Bill and his wife relocated to Las Cruces, he began to enjoy the local cuisine that was available to him. He realized that he had begun to stray from the healthy habits that had helped him maintain a healthy weight in the past. After learning of the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, Bill decided to give it a try and get back to what had worked previously.

I would highly recommend the MOVE! program to other Veterans who are struggling with weight management.

Adopting New Strategies

When Bill started attending both in-person and virtual MOVE! group sessions, he discovered MOVE!’s emphasis on the importance of small, sustainable changes that combine to create a healthy lifestyle. "The program was very helpful to me with its thorough educational weekly sessions, its informational handouts, the friendly and informed instructors, comradery with fellow Veterans, and weekly weigh-ins to keep you accountable and motivated." Bill learned how making healthy food and portion choices could help him achieve his goals. He now rides his bicycle regularly to increase his physical activity.

Enjoying His Accomplishment

Bill shares that he will continue following his healthier lifestyle as he creates and pursues more health goals. His progress is encouraging, as he has improved his blood pressure and generally feels better about himself. He is especially grateful to his wife for her support throughout his weight loss journey. Bill reports that she too has lost weight and improved her health by being part of Bill’s MOVE! journey and embracing the new habits they have developed together!
