The Benefits of a Healthy Weight

When Charles Hanna worked to reach a healthy weight with the help of the MOVE! team at the Colmery-O’Neil Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in Topeka, KS, he also experienced other benefits to his daily life.

 

 

Setting a Course

Charles shares that his journey to a healthy weight began after a visit to his primary care physician. Upon learning that his weight increased his risk for a variety of conditions, Charles realized it was essential to make a change and lose weight. He was invited to participate in the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, which offers Veterans guidance and support as they strive to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

A Change in Attitude

Charles began attending group sessions with other Veterans at his local VA. He explains that group participation and encouragement from his MOVE! team were essential in helping him stay on track and maintain his motivation. Charles also appreciated tools such as the MOVE! Food and Physical Activity Log, which helped him track his progress along the way. "As I progressed through the course," he recalls, "I began to feel much better and my attitude also improved." Charles began to make small changes to his daily routine, like being mindful of the kinds and amounts of food he consumed. He was also able to improve his sleep schedule and added a regular exercise routine.

Signs of Progress

Since starting MOVE!, Charles has lost nearly 100 pounds. Along with his reduced weight, many aspects of his life have changed. He feels more mentally sharp, with improved memory and greater ability to organize his thoughts. All in all, Charles has "a better outlook on life" and his positivity has helped improve his relationships. He plans to continue his progress by maintaining his healthy habits and thanks his family, friends, and MOVE! team for their support.
