Finding His Motivation

Grant Dunford discovered the means to manage his weight and improve his health through MOVE!.

Working with the MOVE! team at the Hershel "Woody" Williams VA Medical Center in Huntington, WV, Grant built a healthy lifestyle and accomplished his goals.

The Right Step Forward

Before starting MOVE! last year, Grant was discouraged about his weight. He had struggled to reach a healthy weight for years, and says he was "feeling bad all the time." During a conversation with his VA provider, he learned that by losing weight he could improve other health concerns including diabetes and chronic pain. His provider suggested the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans to address these specific health concerns and to improve Grant's overall health and well being.

Forming the Right Strategy

Grant shares that from the very start, the support of his MOVE! team was essential in helping him develop healthy habits for eating and physical activity. Among other changes, MOVE! helped Grant pay closer attention to his portion sizes, eat healthier foods, and develop an exercise routine that included walking, swimming, and water aerobics. In addition to the encouragement of his MOVE! team, Grant notes that the support of his fellow Veterans was a big contributor to his success.

Reaching His Goals

Since starting MOVE!, Grant has lost nearly 50 pounds and continues to strive for even greater success. More than just the number on the scale, however, Grant shares that his weight loss has improved his life in other ways. He now has a more positive outlook on life, with a "better insight" that allows him to enjoy life more. Grant is motivated to continue his healthy lifestyle and will maintain the habits that have made such a difference to his health.
