Embracing Discipline Leads to Change
Michael Deffenbaugh leaned on the skills he learned in the Marine Corps to help him adopt healthy habits while working with the MOVE! team at the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr. VA Medical Center in Memphis, TN.
Reversing a Trend
Michael became motivated to lose weight after he began experiencing health challenges. "I was diagnosed with diabetes," he recalls, "and at that point I made a mental decision that I was going to do what I could to reverse that diagnosis." Michael’s health care team recommended the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans, and while he was "a little skeptical," he decided to give it his best shot.
When you think you can't do this, or it's impossible, remember back to your training and the discipline that was instilled in you. You've got this. Never quit, never surrender!

Building a Lifestyle
"Boy, was I wrong," Michael explains. "In MOVE!, I was able to learn many new things…like tracking what I’m eating, the calorie intake recommended for men and women, learning how to substitute where I can, how to build a proper plate, and so much more." In addition to learning strategies for healthy eating habits, Michael also committed to becoming more active. Choosing to participate in MOVE! group sessions, Michael discovered just how helpful it was to discuss progress, barriers and problem solving with others in his group.
Enjoying His Progress
Michael credits his support network for their encouragement and assistance during his efforts to lose weight. "First and foremost," he shares, "my wife was and still is my biggest support. Secondly, the rest of my family, and last but not least, my health care team." Thanks to his efforts, Michael has lost weight, feels better, and is enjoying life. "I love hunting and fishing so that’s what I do for fun," he explains. "I am exercising and continuing to eat healthier."
