A Fresh Start With MOVE!
When David Davis learned that losing weight could have a positive impact on his health, he decided to set out on a journey to a new, healthier lifestyle.
With the help of the MOVE! team at the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center in Fort Wayne, IN, David made small, gradual changes in his daily routine that resulted in numerous health benefits.
A New Journey
David’s path to better health began in 2022, when he was diagnosed with fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome. He knew that his prior lifestyle choices had adversely affected his health, and these diagnoses now prompted him to take action. His VA provider advised David that losing weight would help protect him from further disease and recommended that he consider participating in the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans.
The MOVE! program works.

A New Strategy
At his first MOVE! session, David learned new strategies to manage his weight and improve his health. One particularly useful tool for David was limiting his portions while being mindful of the food and beverages he consumed. He chose to include foods that aligned with the Mediterranean diet and learned new recipes that contained vegetables. He enjoyed learning new ways to flavor food without using as much salt. In addition to these changes to his diet, David gradually increased his physical activity and is now walking up to 4.5 miles every day. He shares, “If I used to get an urge to exercise, I would sit and just wait until the feeling passed. Now, If I don’t walk, I don’t feel right.”
A New Normal
Since starting MOVE!, David has experienced numerous health benefits. His blood sugar and lipid levels have improved, as well as his liver lab results, and on the average day, he has more energy and breathes better. These changes will help protect him from further issues with his liver. He has lost over 40 pounds and is committed to continue with his positive lifestyle changes. “The MOVE! Program works,” he explains. “It gave me the knowledge and motivation I needed to make small changes like walking to improve my health. Now I feel better, can breathe better, and have more energy.”
