Learning and Achieving with MOVE!

Armindo Cerejo put together what he learned by participating in TeleMOVE! through the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, CT to adjust his lifestyle and achieve his health goals.

Stepping Up

Armindo shares that "I started worrying about my weight and lack of energy since retiring 8 years ago." As he became less active, he found it more difficult to maintain a healthy weight. When Armindo’s VA primary care provider suggested that the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans could help him take charge of his health, he opted to try TeleMOVE! Home Telehealth and focus on increasing his physical activity.

MOVE! is designed for everyone, regardless of their physical condition.

Gaining Understanding

As Armindo began his journey to better health, he discovered that the MOVE! Veteran Workbook was an essential tool. "[It] is an excellent source of education for understanding how to make healthy choices of nutrition while maintaining a healthy lifestyle," he explains. The benefit of tracking tools for Armindo is evident as he shares, "I used a smart watch and phone to track my activity and a digital scale provided by the VA." In addition, his MOVE! dietitian, Renee Wehry, was always "just a phone call away" to support him and keep him on track. Armindo is especially grateful for his wife’s assistance, and her contribution of cooking healthy meals to help him progress toward his goals.

Looking Forward

Armindo was able to achieve his initial weight loss goal and plans to maintain the healthy habits he has developed into the future. "I am trying to be more active by allocating time for exercise," he shares, and has also adjusted his routine to make healthier food and beverage choices. Thanks to these changes, Armindo has seen many improvements beyond the number on his scale. "The benefits of participation are many," he says, "such as more energy, clothes that fit better, better sleep, better mood, and more self-esteem."
