Returning to What Works
For over a decade, Alberto Carrillo has worked to maintain a healthy lifestyle and manage his weight with the help of the MOVE! team at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA.
Back Again
Looking to manage weight gain from what he describes as a sedentary work life, Alberto first participated in the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans in 2013. Two years later, he participated again. He shares that he enjoyed himself so much that he became a MOVE! Advanced Peer Coach for other Veterans working on their weight and health. Recently, an email about the MOVE! program reminded him of his fondness for the program and he decided to give it another go, explaining, "I have always been very proactive about my health, always taking initiative and always seeking resources/programs that will keep me in good health."
Everything about this program is helpful. I enjoyed all parts of the meetings.

Tips and Tools for Change
Alberto began attending group sessions with other Veterans and re-acquainted himself with essential strategies to manage his weight and build a healthier lifestyle. "The material from the [MOVE! Veteran] Workbook was super informational, and I will continue to re-read as needed," he shares. "I learned meal ideas from the workbook and from recipe websites shared in class by my facilitator and fellow Veterans." Alberto also made use of the MOVE! Food and Physical Activity Log to help him track his intake and exercise. He is also tracking his weight closely and plans to keep this new habit for the long term. Using these strategies and the helpful reminders from the Annie text messaging system, he has stayed on track with his goals.
Keeping Good Habits
Since starting MOVE! again, Alberto has lost over 20 pounds and is sleeping better. He attributes these changes to his healthy lifestyle. In addition to being mindful when choosing and eating food, Alberto has also found new ways to work physical activity into his daily routine, such as using light weights and resistance bands while watching TV. "I am now constantly aware of when I sit too long," he explains. Most importantly, Alberto loves that he now has more energy to be very active in his community, including in local organizations, community events, and VA programs. Along with his VA team, Alberto draws support from his son and granddaughter, who provide him with encouragement, praise, and even healthy food to keep him on track! Reflecting on his MOVE! experience, Alberto’s message to other Veterans is one of encouragement: "You’ll be thankful for participating."
