The Power of Perseverance
Anvernita "Nikki" Liggins committed herself to building a new lifestyle and improving her overall health by managing her weight.
Nikki worked with the MOVE! team at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital in San Antonio, TX, to develop healthy eating and physical activity habits.
Regaining Her Confidence
Nikki explains that her issues with maintaining a healthy weight began when she suffered an injury that led to unforeseen consequences. "I hurt my back," she explains, "and was put on a medication that caused me to gain a lot of weight." Nikki tried to manage her weight through various programs and diets but found that despite her efforts, she did not have lasting success. Still, she never stopped trying. She recalls, "I refused to give up! I have so much to live for and I've always wanted to be healthier." After Nikki was informed that she was at high risk for diabetes, she thought about the possibility of not being there for her grandchildren and resolved to do whatever was needed to accomplish her health goals. She created a new path in her weight loss journey with the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans.
MOVE! can and will work if [you] are willing to give it a chance and stay positive!
Strength in Accountability
When Nikki started TeleMOVE!, it was her second time in MOVE!. Though she had struggled to achieve her desired results the first time, Nikki started to see more positive results. "The reason it worked this time," she explains, "is because I was serious about being accountable." For Nikki, accountability meant regularly using MOVE!'s online resources to track her weight, food and drink intake, and physical activity. In addition to her own discipline, Nikki relied on the support of her grandchildren as she worked toward better health. She found motivation in her desire to have a long, healthy, and active life with them!
A New Healthy Routine
Since starting MOVE!, Nikki has lost 65 pounds, and she continues to strive for even greater progress. She explains that "I eat 3 healthy meals every day, I go for my walks almost every day, and when I don't walk I play rap music to motivate me, and I walk in place…I love music and anything with a snappy beat helps me to keep moving." Nikki also shares that her life "has changed in so many positive ways." She has more energy, feels less pain, and is no longer at high risk for diabetes. Thanks to her effort and perseverance, Nikki is enjoying her new healthy life with her grandchildren!
