Crafting a Happier, Healthier Future

Darcy Richardson transformed his life with the help of the MOVE! team at the VA Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics in Klamath Falls, OR and experienced "unbelievable" changes.

Starting to Make Changes

In November 2024, Darcy decided it was time to focus on his weight. He had tried a variety of strategies including what he called "fad" diets and even eating just one meal per day, but lasting progress remained out of reach. Darcy consulted with his VA doctor, who recommended the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans. With an open mind and ready to take the next steps, Darcy started MOVE! alongside other Veterans who shared similar goals.

Working Together

With MOVE!, Darcy found more than just a program; he found a whole team dedicated to his progress. "They’re very dedicated people," he explains. Through both group and individual sessions, he discovered effective strategies for a healthier lifestyle. In addition to being mindful and selective of the types and amounts of food he consumed, he learned how to ramp up his physical activity at a pace that worked for him. Balancing these simple yet significant changes, Darcy started to see progress.

Staying the Course

Thanks to these lifestyle changes that are now everyday habits, Darcy feels optimistic. "I’ve never been so happy in my new life," he shares. "I’m exercising more. I don’t overeat…I don’t give up when I fail sometimes." Support from his wife has been a source of strength for Darcy, complementing the encouragement he receives from the MOVE! team and other MOVE! participants. His health improvements include lower blood pressure, less knee pain, and a newfound ability to tackle projects without fatigue. "I can do projects standing for longer periods," he reports. Darcy is committed to his new lifestyle and to stick with MOVE!, saying, "I’ll be doing the program for as long as permitted!"
