Consistency Leads to Results

Harold Miller stuck with his plan to make small, manageable changes that led to a healthy lifestyle and helped him achieve his weight management goals while working with the MOVE! team in Lexington, KY.

 

 

Pushing Past the Plateau

"Losing weight has been a struggle for me since my high school days," Harold explains. Despite giving his best effort to commercial weight loss plans and even those offered by local hospitals, Harold was unable to maintain a healthy weight. "Each plan led to initial weight loss," he recalls, "but soon after, I encountered a plateau, eventually regaining the weight I had lost." Harold found support from his VA health care team, including the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans team, sharing, "my counselors and primary care doctor provided numerous suggestions and guidance."

His Plan Comes Together

Harold used a variety of options, including group and individual visits and the MOVE! Coach mobile app, as well as tools like the MOVE! Food and Physical Activity Log. He embraced new strategies for eating and physical activity to maximize the effectiveness of weight management medication provided by his VA healthcare team. "The medication helped reduce my appetite," he shares, "and when I combined that with the tools I had learned over time, I started to see a satisfying and sustainable weight loss that continues to this day." Harold enjoyed the MOVE! group sessions and being able to connect with other Veterans who were also working on losing weight, explaining that the reinforcement helped keep him positive and motivated. He is especially grateful for the support of his MOVE! team, including dietitian Lydia Rossi, and his VA primary care provider, Dr. Laura Goodsell.

Weight Loss and Much More

In addition to losing more than 30 pounds since starting MOVE!, Harold has experienced many other health benefits. "I’ve had one hip replaced," he explains, "and substantial arthritis in my lower back. By losing over 30 pounds, I’ve decreased my need for pain medication and made walking enjoyable again." Harold plans to continue working toward a new goal of losing another 20 to 30 pounds, sharing that his experience with MOVE! has taught him the value of making small, realistic changes to his habits and consistency in the pursuit of his health goals.
